 USIBC reaffirms faith in Bengal

“Bengal should harp on its talented work pool to catch the fancy of US companies “said Mr. Ron Somers, the President of US India Business Council (USIBC). The President of USIBC asserted that Kolkata has not been dropped off the radars of its members and many of USIBC’s member companies are very active in Bengal. Mr. Somers also reiterated that this positive trend will continue as West Bengal would continue to maintain a friendly investor climate in the state and American investors would continue to be welcome in West Bengal

City company wins best export unit award

A city based IT Company Anshinsoft, headquartered in Silicon Valley has been adjudged as the best export unit in electronic and Computer software products for the year 2007-08 in the category of SSI by Export Promotion Council for EOUs and SEZs, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. The award was declared on 23rd December, 2009 by EPCES.  Hewlett Packard (I) Software Pvt. Ltd won the award as the best EOU in non SSI while the best SEZ award in non SSI went to Infosys.  Anshinsoft is a technology company which focuses on end-to-end e-Business software development having top tier client bases around the globe which include USA, Japan, Hongkong and Singapore. The company has a state-of-art development center in Kolkata

Kolkata Entrepreneur Honoured

Dr Tinku Acharya of Intellectual Ventures, Kolkata was elected a Fellow of the The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Dr Acharya got IEEE Fellowship representing industry. Dr Acharya is also the Managing Director of Avisere Technology(P) Ltd., Kolkata, a company engaged in high end software development. Dr. Tinku Acharya who contributed immensely to the advancement of  VLSI Algorithms and Architectures for Electronic Imaging and VLSI Signal Processing Systems was the recipient of 2009 National Academy of Science in India (NASI) - Reliance "Platinum Jubilee Award for innovation in Physical Sciences". In 2008, he got the "Outstanding Engineer of the Year" Award from IEEE SouthWest Region 6, USA and "Engineering of the Year" Award from IEEE Phoenix Section. He was recognized as the "Most Prolific Inventor" in Intel Corporation worldwide in 1999 and 2001. He was recognized the "Most Prolific Inventor" of Intel Arizona for consecutive 5 years (1997-2001). Dr Acharya is closely attached to the IT Department in Kolkata as an Advisor.

City talents acknowledged by National Academy of Science

Kolkata can play an important role in Science and technology during next five years as opioned by the National Academy of Sciences, India. The scientists attending the 79th annual symposium held in Kolkata unanimously agreed that the city had been a nursery of Indian science and it’s a time to recreate the era when the country needs at least 1,00,000 scientist in next few years and city’s talent pool can contribute significantly. West Bengal is a state which still inspires students to go for post graduate research forsaking high paying jobs in Information Technology or Engineering. The inherent creativity in the youth in the city can go a long way in furthering Indian science which badly needs innovators.

 Wipro takes more land for second campus in the city

TCS kept expanding in the city rapidly as the company has just taken 2.5 lakhs sq. ft. of prime office space in the Unitech IT SEZ at Rajarhat. Incidentally this is the company’s eighth software facility in the city where 3000 people will work. TCS is also creating a 40 acre SEZ facility at Rajarhat which can house 15000 professionals. The development comes at a time when the TCS headcounts in Kolkata has been growing persistently and all the seven existing facilities are optimized. The company remains the largest IT services exporter from Kolkata during the current year as well.

TCS adds office space for additional headcounts

The Electronic Major Videocon is about to start the commercial production of its Rs. 100 crore Liquid Crystal Display panel unit in Kolkata. The facility is first of its kind in the country with Japanese collaboration. Videocon engineers from its research academy in Tokyo are working round the clock to commence the production as per schedule. The company will export the LCD panels to Singapore after meeting its own requirements in the country. Videocon is also executing a 10 MW solar power project in Purulia, an electronic component manufacturing facility at Siliguri and an IT Park at Salt Lake, Kolkata.

 More Power in the state

A 650 mega watt hydel power plant is coming up in Bhutan generating power exclusively for West Bengal. The proposal received approval from the central government. The water of Torsa river would be utilized to generate power which would be exclusively fed into the state grid.  Beside this 650 mega watt power project, two more plants using the Torsa water of higher capacities in the region of 900 MW to 1000 MW are under negotiation. Gartner, the opinion maker, had ranked West Bengal as number one in power, both in availability and quality, among other states in the country. This development will further strengthen the power situation in the state

Renewable energy boost in Bengal

Following the investment made by the US solar power generating major Perseus in Haldia, another US manufacturing major of mono-crystalline silicon solar cells and a supplier of solar modules is all set to invest in Bengal’s solar energy sector. The company has recently tied up with a local company to produce one  MW solar energy in the first year, with an additional 250 KW in the second year. The solar cell manufacturing unit in Haldia by Perseus is likely to be the Asia’s largest solar cell manufacturing unit. Bhaskar Silicon, an Indian subsidiary of Singapore based company is also setting up an integrated solar complex at Haldia where West Bengal Govt. through its renewable energy arm GEDCL will also have its share in investment.  The project will be the largest integrated solar power complex in the world to manufacture Poly Silicon which is required for solar panels. Currently poly silicon are imported from abroad.

IIT Kharagpur is positioned on the top

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has scored the highest in terms of HR perception in one of the recent surveys conducted by IDC, the premier global provider of market intelligence, advisory services. The survey involved 111 engineering colleges all over India. The regional engineering college, Durgapur in West Bengal is also placed among the first thirty with other IITs, BITs, BHU and other regional engineering colleges.

Videocon makes the city a D2H hub

Videocon, the consumer electronics giant has decided to create their central hub of D2H Television manufacturing in Taratala, at Kolkata. Videocon Taratala Factory is also implementing their project to manufacture LCD panels at the same facility. Videocon plans to manufacture some 3.5 lakhs LCD panels at Taratala factory annually. Parallely, the company will manufacture flat television with in-built D2H set top box. The company plans to roll out 30000 Television sets per year with in-built set top box from Taratala factory. Videocon D2H has partnered with Irdeto for a modular scalable Conditional Access System (CAS) with the technical support from Tech Mahindra in the IT space and IBM for technology infrastructure. This will provide a major boost to electronic hardware in Bengal.
