 Infosys finally lands in Kolkata
The Indian IT major Infosys is positioned for their exclusive campus in Kolkata on a 90 acres plot at the fringes of the city, near Kolkata airport being allotted by IT Department. “The campus will seek SEZ status and will be one of the best in class” says Mr. Gopalkrishnan, C.E.O. Infosys. At the start, the company will pump in Rs 500 crore to build the campus and empower the new campus with 5000 people. Infosys chief is confident to achieve 20,000 employee mark in a shorter span of time than what it took in Bangalore.  The new campus at Kolkata will be a multi-technology development center which can support any client, any technology and any service along with BPO operations as well as training facilities for employees. Infosys getting onboard the bandwagon in Kolkata, surely gives a new and more positive dimension to the growth prospects in the state.
 Wipro riding their second wave of expansion
The tech major Wipro has also acquired an additional 90 acres of land at Kolkata. The company has grown exponentially in their existing SEZ campus at Salt Lake IT Hub and harbors major growth plans for the city. The company will invest 500 crores in the first phase for the new SEZ facility to be built in their newly acquired land near the Infosys campus. The latest campus will be the most contemporary facility having all the amenities and will generate employment for more than 5,000 in the first phase in core technology and IT enable services and Research & Development work.
 Ericsson’s entry, yet another feather in Kolkata’s cap
Ericsson, the Swedish Telecom giant, opened a software development center at Salt Lake, Sector-V to exploit the famous IT talent pool available in Kolkata. The company will initially start with 200 employees and raise it to 400 in a few months in 35,000 sq. ft. of rented premises. Ericsson’s entry will add to the city’s reputation as a knowledge hub. The company will develop the core software in Telecom sector. Ericsson’s entry will be followed by another Swedish firm IFS Solutions, a pioneer in component based enterprise resources planning software and application.
 British agency for best practices in IT outsource operation visits Kolkata
National Outsourcing Association of UK has expressed it’s satisfaction on the best practices which are being followed by local IT companies undertaking UK jobs.  The Director of National Outsourcing Association along with UK Trade and Investment Advisor and representatives of some IT firms visited Kolkata and interacted with the local government and the Indian companies undertaking UK jobs. The famous British IT entity HSBC Data Processing Center has a sizeable presence in Kolkata and have multiplied it’s operation during last couple of years to be the fourth biggest exporter from Kolkata Software Technology Park.
 Home grown company flourishes in the state
A Bengal based IT business enterprise, Pinnacle Infotech Solutions, has been assigned to craft a virtual model of 5,400 crore Delhi Airport modernization roadmap. The company is working closely with L&T the principal contractor of the project for the last nine months on this project. The company has been named among top IT innovators in 2007-08 by NASSCOM. Pinnacle, having 250 clients worldwide, offices at Houston, California and Abu Dhabi, is essentially a CAD solution company providing building information modeling, architectural and engineering design, AUTOCAD revit services, HVAC design services, plumbing design and detailing services and solution. Presently the company operates out of a 6 acre campus at Durgapur and setting up a new 50,000 sq. ft. facility at Rajarhat and a second campus on another 6 acres at Durgapur.
  Second campus for Erevmax in the city
The US based Erevmax Technologies, the global leader in product and services of revenue management in hotel industry is all set to launch it’s second campus at Rajarhat Knowledge Corridor, Kolkata. The company has grown exponentially during past years and presently operates from DLF Tower, New-Town, employing 300 professionals. The new facility at Rajarhat will house 1000 people which the company would like to add in next two years. The firm also plans to roll out it’s new product which helps revenue maximization by around 50% for the hospitality industry. The company plans to enter in the Indian market soon.  The company has 15 branches all over the Europe, UK, USA and Middle East with their core development center at Kolkata, India.
  Webel floats second Venture Capital fund
The State Government has once again floated a new VC company to support smaller IT enterprises in Bengal. The first Venture fund was floated by State Government in 2001. The new VC will have a corpus of Rs 25 crore out of which Rs 4 crore has been disbursed to four companies in the areas of Data Security, IT based power solutions, Educational Technology and Radio Frequency Identification Solutions. There are about 30 proposals pending for evaluation and subsequent approval. In a recent study, the global consultant Dun and Bradstreet has placed Kolkata higher in terms of quality of work and positive outlook over cities like Pune and Chennai. The key to future growth therefore lies substantially in smaller enterprises and the value addition that they can achieve in the area of products and services.
  Home grown hardware company achieves another milestone
The city based computer manufacturing company Xenitis, renowned for their low cost PCs under the “Aamar PC” brand name has crossed the Rs 1000 crore mark in the last financial year. The company followed China model of technology and systems of volume manufacturing. The company was the first to launch PCs at a price below Rs 10,000, followed by India’s first laptop priced at under Rs 20,000. The company produces PCs and laptops using industry accepted standard components which are internationally sourced. The company has ambitious plans to emerge as a volume manufacturing brand and is planning an initial public offering (IPO) to fund the second phase of expansion.
  HTMT plans BIG in the State
HTMT Global Solutions, the IT outfit of Hinduja Group is looking at doubling it’s capacity at Durgapur. The company, which started at Durgapur only about a year back in rented premises, today employs over 1,200 professionals. HTMT plans to reach 2,400 by the end of this fiscal. Moreover, the company has been allotted a plot of land at Durgapur where it has started putting up it’s own facility. Once completed, the manpower requirement will grow substantially.
 More infrastructural facilities in Kolkata
The Kolkata based Salarpuria group sees huge opportunity in Kolkata in IT SEZ project as well as in hospitality business. The group is aggressive in investment in both the sectors while bringing in Novotel hotel at Rajarhat as well creating two IT Special Economic Zones. The company planned to create an IT SEZ on a 40 acres land at Bantala and a 250 acres similar facility at Kalyani, near Kolkata for which it has already received in-principle approval from the Central Government. The group will execute these projects by 2010 with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore.
