POWER

West Bengal’s Electrical Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution is the best in India and the State has excess energy availability. The availability and quality of power in its IT enclaves are among the best in the country.

In fact, in their recent surveys both NASSCOM and GARTNER have ranked Kolkata as the best place in the country on the dimension of power infrastructure.

INDUSTRIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

An important requirement for this sector is the ready availability of business space with state-of-the-art support infrastructure.

WEBEL (West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Limited), a Government of West Bengal undertaking, is the nodal agency for development of the electronics industry, and is the facilitator for development of Information Technology in the state. WEBEL has been continuously trying to keep ready space available for prospective entrepreneurs. Towards this end, they have set up the Salt Lake Electronic Complex (Saltlec), India’s first fully integrated electronics complex in the country, in Salt Lake. This 150-acre pollution free hi-tech industrial zone has been designed to provide companies with world-class start-up services and facilities. The area, only 8 km from the international airport, has a large hinterland of residential Salt Lake which offers modern housing at very competitive rates. 160 companies employing over 12,500 people, world-class institutions, training and research centres and major enterprises from India and overseas are located here.

The presence of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Sema, The Chatterjee Group (TCG), Computer Associates, TCS, Cognizant and the like have put the city on the global IT map. The largest operations of TCG Software Services are in Kolkata.
  • The ready to use space which have been created include - 2,50,000-sq. ft. Standard Design Factory provided under Software Technology Park (STP) scheme.

  • The newly opened STP II with 60,000-sq. ft. built up area allotted to software companies.

  • INFINITY – the 2,60,000 sq. ft. high productivity, fully intelligent workplace is attracting IT majors in a big way.

  • First phase of Bengal Intelligent Park covering a total area of about 50,000-sq. ft. - with fully integrated facilities of international standards for IT and software majors - is ready and fully occupied. Phase II and III are proposed to be built shortly.

  • A Third STP is coming up shortly.

  • Two new IT Habitats coming up at Kalyani and Durgapur.

WEBEL also offers plots of land on easy terms in the SALTEC area.

More new infrastructure for IT & ITeS units, very close to Salt Lake:
  • New Kolkata Township of Rajarhat
  • 'Sunrise City' at Nonadanga

The renowned DLF Group will develop an IT Park on the 10 acres of land at Rajarhat, New Town. The Park will have atleast 3.00 lacs sq.ft. area built in the first phase followed by second phase adding up to a total of 1 million sq.ft..

The state government is also actively supporting setting up of an optic fibre cable based statewide communication network using West Bengal State Electricity Board’s (WBSEB) extensive transmission and distribution network. This network is expected to be extensively used by both private and public sector including the state government for spread of IT. Rapid implementation of statewide e-governance has connected the state capital with all the district headquarters.

Thus, as evident from above, the state has all the ingredients for the IT industry to develop and grow successfully, including trained manpower, well developed infrastructural facilities and a supportive government, which has already declared an user-friendly, comprehensive package of fiscal incentives for the IT industry.
